Santa in the Sky with Aviation Academy of Louisiana

My discovery flight with owner Craig Simon and Santa

Sometimes a simple giveaway turns into a moment you’ll never forget.

I was recently announced as the winner of a discovery flight giveaway from Aviation Academy of Louisiana, and I was given the opportunity to choose between a plane or helicopter flight. Having flown several times in my Uncle’s plane, I decided this was the perfect chance to experience something new and chose the helicopter flight—and I’m so glad I did.

The flight was led by Craig Simon, owner of Aviation Academy of Louisiana, who took me up for an incredible helicopter ride over Acadiana. What I didn’t know was that Craig had a special surprise planned—one that turned an already exciting experience into something truly magical.

During the flight, we made a stop at the Duson Fire Department to pick up Santa Claus, played by Duson Mayor Johnny Thibodeaux. From there, we flew Santa to Duson Elementary School, creating a moment that brought joy and excitement to students and staff alike. Seeing Santa arrive by helicopter was unforgettable and something the kids will surely remember for years to come.

Craig shared that Aviation Academy of Louisiana has been participating in this Christmas tradition for the past five years, helping bring holiday magic to the community from the sky. Being able to witness—and be part of—that tradition firsthand made the experience even more meaningful.

The entire day was an incredible reminder of how local businesses continue to give back and create memorable moments throughout Acadiana. I am extremely thankful to Aviation Academy of Louisiana for allowing me to be part of such a special experience and for opening my eyes to a side of aviation that many people don’t get to see.

For those who may be interested, Aviation Academy of Louisiana regularly hosts discovery flight giveaways on their Facebook page, giving others the chance to experience aviation firsthand. It’s definitely worth following so you don’t miss your opportunity to win.

Adding to the excitement, local filmmaker David Rabalais recently filmed portions of his upcoming movie The Fois at Aviation Academy of Louisiana. The film is expected to be released in the next few months, further highlighting the academy as a hub for both aviation and creative storytelling in our region.

From learning about aviation to watching Santa fly in by helicopter, this was an experience that perfectly captured the spirit of community, creativity, and Louisiana charm.
