From Netflix to Food Network: A Louisiana Back Porch Talk with Nina Charles

Under the shade of the oaks at Parc De Oaks in Lafayette, I sat down with Louisiana’s own Nina Charles — baker, food truck owner, and TV personality who’s brought her creative spirit from Acadiana to national screens. Many know her from Netflix’s Is It Cake? and the Food Network’s Halloween Baking Championship, but her journey to becoming a baker wasn’t a traditional one.

Nina originally studied fashion design, and that creative foundation still shapes the way she approaches her work today. Her eye for design, color, and presentation shows up in every cake she makes. What started as a simple mission to make the perfect birthday cake for her niece turned into a full-blown passion and career. She taught herself through tutorials, trial and error, and sheer determination.

During our conversation, Nina opened up about life after reality TV — balancing expectations, pressure, and the desire to keep evolving while staying grounded. She has always been known for her originality and confidence, embracing who she is without apology. That same authenticity has earned her a loyal following both online and in person.

We also touched on the challenges that come with public recognition, including online criticism. Nina chooses to focus on the support she receives and uses that encouragement as fuel to keep pushing forward. Her passion for creativity, fashion, and food continues to evolve, and she’s already dreaming about future projects and collaborations.

Whether she’s baking, designing, or brainstorming her next big idea, Nina Charles continues to show what it means to be unapologetically yourself — a true reflection of Louisiana talent and resilience.
